9 July 1881 — Syltebo, Romsdalsfjord
Saturday. 9th [July 1881]. I had my Wolf Fish laid out on the grass. I sat in the tent and made a picture in oils of him. When that was done I came in & we had a cold lunch. After it Monty & I & John went off into the woods close by and found a large ant hill into which we popped our monster with the intention of getting his skeleton some day as a memento– At 4.30 Monty & I went sea fishing with the Ancient Mariner. It got warm & fine & the flies on the walk down were maddening. Monty laid abt himself & me to flip them off with his coat. The old man had to take a boat & go across the river to fetch his own boat & then at last we started. We trolled with a spoon & got 6 nice little sea trout but we were a long time securing them & I lost 6 besides. It was very pleasant being rowed gently. The sun was warm– We did not get home till after 8 & the others were ravenous for dinner– Being Satr eveng there was no fishing. Henry was unsuccessful this afternoon– In the evening we sat in the hall & played dominoes. Monty & I lost—it was a darkish night & cold– Monty insisted on trying dodges for putting up an awning over the door before we went to bed—& we arranged what is to be done with it on Monday.
