19 July 1881 — Syltebo, Romsdalsfjord
Tuesday. 19th July [1881]. Henry & the Genl. both went fishing in the early morning & Henry got a salmon 16 lbs. Breakfast at 10—all the time I was dressing Monty kept up a conversation with me thro’ the floor, beginning by telling me it was very late & waking me up with a start—but found it was 8 o’clock. After breakfast I ordered the dinner & then I went out with Monty & took a small rod and fished from the river bank up near Pflen but neither he nor I caught anything. We came on down to the bank & tried down there– Monty caught a trout & a salmon & I nothing—we had to come in to dinner at 4– After dinner Henry went to Bjornes & Monty to Frieswold. I walked down to meet Monty at Pflen with Hill & fished from the bank while waiting for him. I fished Pflen pool from the boat with M. & took 0—we then landed & walked to Gredhus pool & got into the boat again & fished there but got 0. Monty got a rise– Then they landed one near Syltebo & I went to fish on the bank where the Genl. was fishing & Monty went on in the boat to Lower Gredhus. Suddenly I heard his reel go & saw he had a fish so I put down my rod & ran along a little way expecting him to land close by to land his fish– But off he set downstream & the boat never stopped till it nearly got out to sea– I & the Genl. raced down to see the landing & we got down to the mouth of the torrent just in time to find Monty had landed & to see Thorwald gaff a big fish which nearly dragged him down & Monty had to run up & gaff him again & drag him up on the shore. We carried the fish up in procession to the house & he weighed 32 lbs. Found Henry had caught nothing– Monty’s fish was marked out on a board to be carved as a memento. We had supper & went to bed– Over 100 lbs of fish had been caught today. It appears it is the custom here to give the man who gaffs a fish of over 30 lbs weight a specie dollar–& the natives call them specie fish.
