22 July 1881 — Syltebo, Romsdalsfjord
Friday. 22nd July [1881]. Henry went to Bjornes to fish– The Genl. to Frieswold. I & Monty went down to the Bank & I tried for trout with his little rod. I also read & worked & so the morning went by. Henry caught a fish & no one else– We dined at 4 & then Henry went to Frieswold, Monty to Bjornes & the Genl. to the Bank. After reading a little time I found it so cold & the showers having cleared away that I put on a coat & thought I wd go to the Bank & have a cast for salmon. I found the Genl. there and he persuaded me to try for trout, (& put me on a fly) close to the sea– I did without success—& then returned to the Bank. It was a lovely evening and there was a beautiful sunset—all the hills became tipped with pink. The Genl. caught 2 salmon at Syltebo rest. Then I began to be tired & thought I would give up casting when suddenly I had a fish on my line. I shouted to the Genl. to come & he sent the boy with the gaff & I held on as best I could till he arrived & got him out after several tries as he cd not get the gaff into him. Then the Genl. came & we weighed it & found it was close on 4 lbs—after a few more casts Monty arrived, having caught nothing & Henry also landed with the like ill success. The Genl. had also caught a 4 lbs trout. We talked it all over at supper & agreed that it was the pleasantest moment of the day when one met & talked over the day’s sport–
