1 August 1881 — En route to Hull
Monday. 1st August [1881]. After a bumping roaring shaking night of it the morning brought finer weather & I was able to get up. As we got more under the English coast the swell became less and every body came on deck & talked over the sad experiences of the night. We passed a great many boats both today & yesterday with Scotchmen fishing for herring. They were quite in the open sea & at first their boats looked disabled as they have a way of taking down their masts. When the steamer went over their nets the pilot generally stopped the engines for a moment in order not to break them. We all sat on deck & read & worked & talked to Mr & Mrs Wingfield’s tiresome noisy little boy who got Monty to give him a cigarette to smoke. Genl. Hankey made his appearance on deck having been laid up in his cabin ever since Saturday. He & I played cribbage in the afternoon & then I played Beggar my neighbour with little Wingfield to keep him quiet. Just at dinner time we got to the mouth of the harbour & were glad to be taking our last meal on board the Tasso & to be at the end of our passage. We landed at Hull abt 10 o’clock & went to the station hotel. We got rooms with difficulty as an Agricultural Show had filled the town. Had some tea & went to bed–
