6 August 1881 — Milton Court, nr. Dorking, Surrey
Saturday. 6th August [1881]. Breakfasted at 10 & then I painted most of the morning while Alice Rate sat & talked with me & we walked after in the garden. After lunch we went to Mrs Drummond’s at Fredley with Alice Rate & Margie. We found a garden party going on there and a good many smart people. Mrs D. & Mrs Kay were surprised & pleased to see us. We met there the Tom Hughes, & Mr Rogers the Rector of St Bartolph’s who had come to Madrid with poor Dean Stanley some years ago. Mr Rogers was in a Bath chair having hurt his spine in a fall from his horse but he was cheerful & agreeable as ever. He talked a great deal abt his departed friend the Dean with affection as all knew him must do. His loss is very widely felt & every body talks of him. We also met a Mr John Bright a great dissenting Minister in these parts. Drove home—had tea—& then I & Henry played lawn tennis with Margie & Mr Sargent the tutor. Dined at 8. It was too cold to sit in the loggia. We sat in the drawing room & had some music. Margie played & both she & Francie sang. Margie plays the piano very charmingly & every thing by heart. Two young Baillies arrived to stay in the house—quiet boys—nice & handsome.
