7 August 1881 — Milton Court, nr. Dorking, Surrey
Sunday. 7th August [1881]. We breakfasted abt 9.30. I went to Dorking Church with Alice & Margie in the carriage. Archdeacon Wilkinson preached a very good sermon in aid of Dorking College Hospital. Drove home. Sat in the garden till lunch. Mr Mathew Arnold came to lunch having walked over from Wotton where he is staying. He was also full of dear Dean Stanley & who was likely to succeed him at the Deanery. After luncheon Alice & I walked a little way with Mr Arnold to shew him a way back to Wotton across the fields. Came in & had tea in the loggia & then went up to my room & wrote. Abt 6.30 I went to the garden & took a saunter with Henry & Alice Rate. Abt 8.30 we had a cold supper after all the party had returned from church &c. I sat a little while with Alice Rate in her room while she undressed & went to bed early.
