9 August 1881 — 3 Savile Row
Tuesday. 9th [August 1881]. Monty returned yesterday afternoon from Cowes where he had been spending Sunday. Hill told me last night that our servant Herbert had been borrowing money from all in the house & so I said Love who had lent him £13 must come & tell me of him– This she did before I got up this morning. This being the second offence we decided to send him away & I went out in the morning with Monty in search of another servant. We walked down Bond Street & en route stopped at a shop & I bought a hat that Monty chose—a shaded red silk hat—dark red in front & bright red behind. We enquired at Blunt the grocer abt servant & then Monty went on in a cab & I walked on to Blanches to ask her if she knew any one & then returned home. Mr Rate came to lunch with us & Dr Chiaradia of Naples called being here for the Medical Congress. At 2 Henry & I started in a hansom for Ladywell Cemetery to visit dear Grannie’s grave & put flowers on it. It was a very windy day. We stayed about ½ hour & then returned home getting to Savile Row abt 5.15. We went to dine with Blanche & Edward at Queen Anne St and met there Merthyr & Theo and Monty & Arthur & had a very pleasant evening. Blanche sang in the evening.
