10 August 1881 — 3 Savile Row
Wednesday. 10th [August 1881]. Wrote &c in morning. I expected to be fetched by Edward Ponsonby to go shopping but it rained & so he did not come– I gave up going to see Lady Somers. At 12.30 Theo came to see me & stay lunch. Arthur came before but could not remain. Luff & Merthyr came to lunch & Monty & Henry were both at home– Blanche also came to lunch so we were a goodly party. Theo hearing me say last night at Blanche’s that I had no travelling clock made me a present of a nice one with a deep bell—& Merthyr promised me 4 plated candlesticks & a silver pincushion. Merthyr & Theo left town & returned to Motcombe in the afternoon. Theo bought a set of Venetian lace of me for £40 & a pocket handkerchief for £3.15 to my great satisfaction. She & Merthyr were both very kind & nice– Blanche took me out in her carriage in the afternoon shopping & we went down to the Cooperative Stores to see abt buying a trunk box for Henry but I cd not find one– Mr Otway sent his carriage for Henry, Monty & me & we went to Cromwell Rd to fetch Mr Otway & drove down to Richmond where he gave us a dinner at the Star & Garter. We met Mrs Phillips a widow—rather vulgar & pretentious, Baron de Worms, Sir Algernon Bosthwick & Ld Dunraven. Very pleasant evening. Mrs P. with her red hair & hat on top of a curly fringe—red satin dress & large diamond brooches was rather a bore– Lord Dunraven had walked over from Coombe where he lives. There was a good deal of talk abt Lady B. Coutts marriage & the report that she fancies herself in an interesting condition which made one sorry & ashamed. The men sat & smoked till abt 11 when we all set off home. It was a splendid moonlight night—& we had a lovely drive home.
