11 August 1881 — 3 Savile Row
Thursday. 11th August [1881]. Rather late down as Mrs Price came to cut my corns. Fred came to bid us goodbye. Mrs Burr came up from the country to see us & stayed chatting sometime. She went out shopping & I busied myself with the packing till lunch time when Mrs Burr returned & lunched & so did Monty. Susan Hepburn our old schoolroom maid came to see me. Blanche fetched me at 3 & we drove together & we returned home for tea. Mama came, also Mme Hurtado & Idita came to call & Mr Burton of National Gallery– When all were gone Arthur came & he & I had a long talk about Jerry who is to remain on under Burroughe’s care to be taught service. We also talked over many family affairs & he was very nice & kind & affectionate. Henry & I went to dine with Lord & Lady Somers who were quite alone– Lady S. went out directly after dinner. While I was standing in the hall talking to her Lord & Lady Tavistock arrived. It was the first time we had ever seen him—altho’ so intimate with Addie. He was better looking than I expected & his being with Addie we must hope they are now living happier together than the world supposes. When he left to go to the house he put his hand on Addie’s shoulder & said he would send her back the carriage. We returned home soon after ten as Arthur & Blanche & Edward & Monty had all promised to go to Savile Row to see us & we took leave of them as we start tomorrow for Paris– Herbert left us–
