15 August 1881 — Paris | |
Monday. 15th [August 1881]. Mr Mitchell came to see Henry & sat talking some time. Henry had known him many years ago when he travelled with Lord Somers as his Dr. He is now the possessor of Condy’s Fluid. He brought a thin kind of coloured stuff like tortoiseshell to show us a new discovery wh he hopes to use for windows. Henry & I walked out together– Mme Joubert came to see Hill & carried her off to the country for a few hours. We walked in the Palais Royale & on to the Grand Hotel where we breakfasted. Walked on to the Embassy to see Mr Atlee & found him in. I sat with him while Henry went up to see Mr Adams—& then fetched me & we walked back to the Hotel– I did not go out again & sat quiet & worked. Henry only went to buy some books to read on our journey. Two menservants came in search of our place but they seemed such fine gentlemen that we were not tempted to engage either. One asked 120 fr a month—12 fr extra for clothes—his washing & wine. We dined at 6 oclock & went off to the station accompanied by M. Belard & left by 9 o’cl train for Turin. Henry & I had our places in the sleeping car & slept pretty well. | |
