18 August 1881 — Milan | |
Thursday. 18th August [1881]. We breakfasted at 9 & directly after went out & were joined by Signor [illegible word] of the Venice & Murano Glass works & drove with him to Bertini’s studio to see the mosaics made by the V. & M. from Bertini’s designs for a church at Trieste. It was in process of being fixed on marble before being sent out. From there we went to the Brera in search of Sigr Cavenaghi & not finding him got his address & went to his house Via Moscova 44– At the door we met his maid servant who told us he was working at St Eufemia & we followed him there & he appeared from a scaffolding on the front of the little church on which he is painting a fresco. We went in & found a very pretty edifice lately restored with a somewhat feeble fresco over the altar by Cavenaghi. He kindly left his work & came with us back to Brera & there in his studio we saw our great Bellini of the Adoration of the Kings nearly restored & very beautiful. It had been entirely repainted & it is now in its original beauty. He showed us our Montagna wh has been transferred to canvass & which he is going to restore & remove the bad restorations done some few years ago. He then took us to the Poldi Museum to see the collection of drawings by the old masters lent by 3 people—one of whom is our friend Morelli to whom the larger portion belong. We looked thro’ the Poldi collection which remains as it was when he died. One splendid Christ crowned with thorns especially struck me. We parted with Cavenaghi & went home to the hotel to lunch. Then we went to the Exhibition & remained there till 5.30. We had our coffee in the gardens & then went to inspect the silks velvets & laces & the Pompeian room with its interesting collection of costumes of Italy. We went out again to the gardens & had a granite while a band played under the shade of the trees– We went back into the building & bought a couple of things of Antonibon of Bassano—a faience lamp & a flower pot & then went home at 5.30 & rested till dinner at 7. In evening played cribbage– | |
