26 August 1881 — Ca’ Capello, Venice
Friday. 26th August [1881]. Copied a letter for Henry– Read & worked– lunched at 1. Castellani of the Stabilimento came to see Henry just before lunch– At 3.30 went out in the gondola with Henry. Called on Mrs Bronson & found her at home. She shewed me some pen & ink sketches by Clara Montalba & one by Princess Louis wh are to accompany an article she (Mrs B) is going to write in an American Paper on the Burano lace schools. I went on to Ca Dario & left cards for Mr & Mrs Curtis & then we went to tea with old Mr Rawdon Brown. Found him up at the top of his stairs waiting for us—in summer grey suit—with red slippers I had brought him from Consple & his hand out of the sling. Mr Malcolm was there to meet us & we sat down to a solemn tea in the dining room surrounded with the painted figures. It was very hot to eat but we managed to do justice to the good fare. We came away almost directly after as our host appeared tired. He had some tea at the same time as we did but Tony was obliged to lift the cup for him neither hand being strong eno’ to do it. He is certainly better tho’ his head gets confused at times. He showed us a letter he had written to his dear friend Cheney which astonished us very much seeing he only had the splints taken off his poor broken hand yesterday. Returned home & sewed & read till dinner at 7. Went out in the gondola for a turn—there was no air at all– Saw the comet– Went to the square where the band was playing– Met P. Teano who promised to dine with us on Sunday. Walked up & down– Went home—cribbage—bed–
