27 August 1881 — Ca’ Capello, Venice
Saturday. 27th [August 1881]. Copied for Henry in the morning. The Director of the Burano school came & we paid him 428 fcs for lace I had sold in England. Sigr Felice came to see abt helpg me to set about modelling again. He promises to come on Monday & bring clay &c. After lunch I & Giovanni set about arranging my boudoir & moved most of the furniture. I had scarcely finished when Mr Brown arrived to pay me a visit. No sling on & gloves on! He seemed feeble & Tony had to help him along. He stayed a very short time & said he must go on to Pss Giovanelli’s—to wh Tony observed, Oh yes, it is all very well, he shall go to Giovanelli’s only to leave a card! It was so hot & I had made myself so hot pulling the furniture abt that I retired to my room & got into a cool dressing gown. I set to work to tear up & arrange old letters. It made me very melancholy reading over all Adeline’s old letters to me very affectionate & many of them answering lectures I had bestowed upon all wh she seemed to take in a very nice spirit—& to think she should be so altered now & entirely estranged by her own conduct from the family & have gone so wrong after having been one of us! Dined at 7. Went for a row & a turn of ½ hour on the Piazza– Played cribbage– Bed– Very hot!
