30 August 1881 — Ca’ Capello, Venice
Tuesday. 30th August [1881]. “Matilde” came to sit to me for me to model her head. Sigr Felice kindly came with her & gave me some sticks to begin with mine not having arrived from England. She sat pretty quiet some time when suddenly she asked leave to loosen her dress & then I saw she was white and faint—merely I believe from sitting quiet so long & not being accustomed to it. She is a pretty gentle very shy girl of 18—has never seen a horse & never been on terra firma. She stayed from 10 till 11.30. I wrote a long letter to Mrs Arthur Hanson & at 4 went out in the gondola with Henry. I had a visit from Mrs Eden who with her sick husband has just returned from Battaglia. We went to leave several cards & then to the Piazza to look at the restoration of the mosaics and of the sculptures in the Ducal Palace colonnade. Henry thought them excellent. Did not go out after dinner. Sent Hill & Giovanni in the gondola– Played cribbage & read in my bedroom resting on the sofa.
