31 August 1881 — Ca’ Capello, Venice
Wednesday. 31st [August 1881]. Called at 7. Breakfast 9. At 10 the model came & sat to me till 12. She got thro’ it very well today only she dropped asleep 2 or 3 times. Wrote a long letter to Emilia Riaño. After lunch I set to work to make cigarettes & made 182 in the afternoon. Henry went out. When he came back he said that he had met Prince Teano with his wife who had suddenly come down from the Cadore to join her husband for a couple of days. She had come with Minghetti & Bonghi & the former having hurt his foot was laid up at the hotel but intended going home to Bologna tonight. Henry therefore went to see him & he sent me messages expressing his regret at not having us at Rome but hoping it would be some day. Helped Henry to paste his despatches into a book which we had begun yesterday. They are the printed copies of his despatches from Consple of wh he had not kept copies. Ld Tenterden in sending them to him reminded him that they were eventually to be returned. Henry wrote a despatch to say that they were his & would never be returned unless in exchange for the original draughts & he told me to remember this. After dinner we took a row & then walked on the Piazza. The band played. Mr & Mrs FitzGerald they are coming to lunch tomorrow. She is a daughter of Lord Houghton’s—& they have not long been married & are on their way to Egypt where he is Director Genl of Finances. Cribbage– Pleasant weather– But threatened a storm.
