1 September 1881 — Ca’ Capello, Venice
Thursday. 1st September [1881]. Wrote a letter before breakfast. Copied for Henry after breakfast. Abt 10.30 my model came & I got on a little with the bust. A thunderstorm came on abt 12 so I let her hurry home lest she shd be caught in the rain. At 1 Mr & Mrs FitzGerald came to lunch. He seems a very clever man. She is pretty & very ladylike. The storm increased & it became so dark they could not see the pictures. They remain till past 3 when the storm seemed over– But it continued to rain till 4. Henry & I pasted in despatches till 5 & then went out to leave cards on Pss Teano & on 2 gentlemen at Danieli’s. Henry went to dine with P. Teano at the New York Hotel. It was a dinner given to the geographical commissioners. I had tea up in my studio & sat & read & wrote to Theo & Maria till Henry returned. He said they had dined abt 60 people. That he & the Prefetto had sat together but by some mistake had been put at the bottom of the table—that Teano tried to make a speech in French but utterly broke down– Several people read speeches & the Swede read a very long one. The storm returned & there was a great deal of thunder & lightening all the evening & heavy rain & it was still going on when we went to bed.
