2 September 1881 — Ca’ Capello, Venice
Friday. 2nd September [1881]. The storm was still growling away when we awoke and went on all the morning. At 10 I modelled till 12. After luncheon I painted till Henry came at 4.30 to fetch me to go out & we went to leave cards on the Edens & then to the Stabilimento & on to see old Rawdon Brown whom we found at home & a good deal better. Lord Houghton’s name having been mentioned he insisted on showing us a letter the FitzGeralds had brought from him– He searched everywhere & then called for Tony who was out. At last he was found & when he came he reminded Brown that he had sent the note to Cheney that morng but as the letter was not posted he got it & opened it & then it was found. There was nothing in it to interest us—but Brown was satisfied. He took leave of him & went home. Worked for an hour pasting into the despatch book. After dinner played cribbage and then went upstairs & we did accounts & read till bed time.
