29 September 1881 — Ca’ Capello, Venice
Thursday. 29th September [1881]. Modelled all the morning & finished my bust which I have decided to have baked. Mr Field turned up suddenly to our surprise. He is an American gentleman we met last year at Rome. We begged him to come to tea this evening. We had another surprise just at lunch time in a visit from Vassif Effendi, Medhat P.’s secretary who had managed to escape when Medhat was taken at Smyrna– We had not seen him since that famous journey we had made in Syria when he had accompanied us & made all the arrangements for us. He is now travelling with the Ex Khedive of Egypt & had arrived from Milan this morning. We were very glad to see him & to hear about the East. He says that he is very anxious about the fate of Medhat P. He was first banished to Jaifa where there was means of communication with him– Suddenly he was removed to Medina since when he has not even been heard of. His family are at Smyrna but he is allowed no communication with them & all fear that Medhat will be made away with by a cup of poisoned coffee. I did not go out—wrote a long letter to Lady Ely telling her all about the Congress here & the kindness of the Queen Margarita to me. Henry went out to call upon Ismail Pasha. It poured all day long so he came in early. After 5 I worked at the despatch book till dinner. Mr & Mrs Bracken, Robert Browning & Miss Browning, Mrs Eden, Mr Malcolm & Capt. Baird dined with us & after dinner we had a little music. Mrs Bracken & I both sang.
