30 September 1881 — Ca’ Capello, Venice
Friday. 30th September [1881]. All the morning arranging & putting away books in my studio. Sigr Felici came to see about having my bust baked & we carried it into another room to leave it to dry. Lunched at 1. At 2 visit from Genl. Kokhovsky & another Russian Commr to the Congress to take leave. The Genl. is a nice man very friendly—begged a photo of Henry & promised his in return. At 3 the Ex Khedive & Vassif Effi came to call & we had Turkish coffee & they smoked & sat a long time talking. The Khedive was very pleasant & polite. Henry asked him abt the tumults now going on in Egypt & he treated it lightly & then they spoke of Syria & the Khedive told us Sultan Abdul Assiz had once proposed to him to exchange Egypt for Syria but he had declined it. I showed him photos of Burano lace & he took off the photos & offered to write & order some. As soon as they were gone we got ready & went to the station & left by the 4 o’cl train for Mogliano where we arrived at 4.50 & were met at the station by Css Marcello. It rained more or less the whole day & was very cold. We found at Mogliano Css Valmarana & her daughter & her sister Mme Nitta, also Signor Massari. As we could not go out we sat & worked & talked & had coffee till dinner. After dinner Signor Pucci & Css Canevaro & her sister Mme Cozzi came & we had some music. Henry, Massari &c played whist. Mme Canevaro sings very well & Pucci accompanied her. I sang some Spanish airs. Theresa Marcello also sang. Bed at 12.
