7 October 1881 — Ca’ Capello, Venice
Friday. 7th October [1881]. Breakfast at 9– Wrote– Prepared paints to begin copy of one of our portraits by Moroni. Lunch at 1.30. While we were at lunch Mr Bentinck called & sat with us. At 3 went out in gondola. I was going to Mrs Bronson when I met her just leaving her door with the Brownings & Mr Field. I begged them all to come to tea with me after their row. Henry got out on the Riva dei Schiavoni to walk to Browns & call on him. I went to call on Lady Digby Murray—found she had left Venice—to Css Valmarana who was out. Mme Hurtado also out & to Mrs Bracken who was at home. She is living in the Casa Guiccioli. She showed me one very handsome room with a fine ceiling with travi & a handsome friese. The family have just sold the house to a speculator & the furniture is to be sold apart– It is mostly very ugly & bad taste. I went home & very soon after arrived the Brownings, Mrs Bronson & Mr Field & we had tea. Henry came in & we sat & talked some time & Browning was very entertaining & pleasant. Miss Browning went upstairs with me to see Zena the cat but she did not receive her very amiably. Pasted in despatches till dinner at 8. In the evening we sat upstairs & played cribbage.
