10 October 1881 — Ca’ Capello, Venice
Monday. 10th October [1881]. Signor Felici came & brought me a boy as a model who was more hideous even than the last so I made an excuse that I was going to wait for Cortelazzo to come to do his bust. Felici kindly remained & prepared the clay ready for me when I wanted it & showed me how to enlarge a bust the 10th part more for making a terra cotta bust. At 10 Signor Pucci came & gave me my first singing lesson. I began to learn Tosti’s Vorrei Morir & sang till nearly 12. I came up & copied the Moroni till lunch. Painted again for an hour after lunch & abt 3 went out in gondola—left cards & went to Danielli to call on Mrs Flower found she was gone. Walked from Danieli’s by the Piazza to Podio’s to see some crayon portraits said to be by Rosalba on sale—bought there a serpent bracelet to send to Emilia Riaño. Took the gondola again at Piazzetta. Took Henry to Stabilimento from whence he walked home– Went to call on Mrs Bronson who was at home by the fire side & sat some time with her. When I returned home I found Mr Field waiting to see me– Henry soon came home & we had tea & a chat. Went to studio & wrote a lot of letters till dinner at 8. After dinner Henry & I went over the proofs of the first pages of my translation of the lace book—very badly done as of course they are not in the habit of doing English printing here– This took us till bed time.
