11 October 1881 — Ca’ Capello, Venice
Tuesday. 11th October [1881]. Practised singing after breakfast till 10.30. Came upstairs & copied the Moroni till lunch. After lunch went out with Henry to call on the Burys at the Britannia—they were in the garden & asked us to go up to their rooms. They are very pleased at the change from Danieli’s. We all went out together in 2 gondolas. Henry met Genl. Hamley at the door just returning from the East having settled the new Greek frontier. We went to Sta Maria Formosa to see the celebrated Palma Vecchio, Sta Barbara. The sun was out & we saw it well. From there we went to S. Giovanni e Paolo & stayed some time looking at the tombs &c. Brought all the Bury party back to the Stabilimento & showed them the mosaic working wh interested them very much & we did not get home till 5.30. Wrote to Monty. After dinner we went to tea at Mme Hurtado’s. Met there the Pss of Montenegro & her brother in law who wore the Albanian costume & was a fine tall man. Her daughter was there—an intelligent little girl who played the piano very well. We came home at 11.30. News of Haymerle’s sudden death.
