12 October 1881 — Ca’ Capello, Venice
Wednesday. 12th October [1881]. Pucci gave me a singing lesson. Mr Ralli called on Henry. I copied a letter for Henry. At 3 we went out in the gondola at Rietti’s door we met the Bury in a gondola looking at frightful pictures wh Henry recommended them not to buy. We went on to Onganias to beg we should have 2nd proofs of the Lace book. I left Henry at the Stabilimento where he was to meet the Burys & take them for a walk. I called on Mme Nitta & heard from her the sad particulars of Haymerle’s death wh seems to have been from heart. Went home– Wrote letters. Henry brought the Burys here & up to the studio where we had tea & they did not stay long. Dined at 7.30. At 9 Lord & Lady Bury & 2 girls, Mme Hurtado & Idita & Mrs Gerald Perry, Count Contarin, Mr & Mrs Bracken, Mr & Miss Browning & Mr Field came to spend the evening & take tea & sat & talked till abt 11 when they departed & we went to bed.
