14 October 1881 — Ca’ Capello, Venice
Friday. 14th October [1881]. Woke with a bad headache. Could do nothing all day but sew & sit in the armchair. I had a letter from Blanche for the first time since her illness & wrote to her. I went down to lunch but had to come back again & lie down in the dark all the afternoon. At 5 had some tea & was a little better. Went down to dinner. Mr White our Minister at Bucharest dined with us & we had a very pleasant evening. He is a tall ungainly kind of figure but has a powerful head—a nice face & a wonderful memory. He & Henry talked over Consple & Eastern affairs & it was most interesting to hear. They went over the things that had happened during the time Henry was at Consple—& he did not leave till after 11–
