15 October 1881 — Ca’ Capello, Venice
Saturday. 15th [October 1881]. Practised singing for an hour. Prepared work for frilling of sheets. Pasted in despatches. The sun came out & the weather improved. At 3 Castellani came to ask me abt Ella Drakes gloves he is having made for her here. We went out in the gondola. Rowed to the Lido & landed at the old Jewish burying ground wh is now overgrown with trees & grass & very difficult to distinguish. We went on by a pretty lane wh leads to the Favorita & passing the new Jewish bury ground went in. It is very well kept & is a large place as there are a great many Jews here. We went on to the Favorita & took in breezes from the open sea. One can hardly believe when living at Venice that one is so near the open sea. We got our gondola again at Sta Elisabetta & went home. Found Cortelazzo had arrived to stay with us. He sat talking to me while I pasted despatches. I copied a letter for Henry. After dinner we sat in the drawing room & I practised my songs—then we played cribbage till bed time. There was a thunderstorm in the night–
