16 October 1881 — Ca’ Capello, Venice
Sunday. 16th October [1881]. It blew hard all the morning & rained & there was no going to church. Cortelazzo gave me a first sitting for his bust from 9.30 till just 2 & I made the rough sketch. We expected Spence to arrive at lunch time but he did not turn up. I had a visit from a Lady Harriet Warde who brought a letter from Mrs Thompson Hankey– She has been here some days but has been ill & leaves tomorrow. Miss Kenyon was with her Lord K’s daughter whom I had not seen for some 15 years & it startles one to see ones grey hairs revealed in the acquaintance of ones youth & one realises the march of time. Read the service– Pasted in despatch book till dinner & again after dinner. Played cribbage. Mr Malcolm came to see me in the afternoon & sat talking a couple of hours. Mr Field came just as he was leaving & had 5 o’cl tea with us. Henry walked to see Brown & B insisted upon walking home with him & Henry says he walked a tremendous pace. I gave Caterina warning that her husband must turn out of the house in 15 days but I would keep her on–
