18 October 1881 — Ca’ Capello, Venice
Tuesday. 18th October [1881]. Had the rest of our carpets put down. Practised singing for an hour & then modelled at Cortelazzo’s bust till lunch time & again after lunch for an hour. Henry took the Bury party to Murano to see the bead making. At 3.30 Idita Hurtado called for me in her sandolo with a gondolier to row behind she rowing in front. We went to the Lido & landed at Sta Elisabetta & from there walked along the shore to Quattro Fontaine where we again got into the sandolo & rowed home. I tried to row for the first time & succeeded very fairly. It was a lovely day and there was a splendid sunset. As we passed the Armenian Convent wh is painted the old Venetian red it was all aglow & one hardly knew which was the object which the reflection. It was quite cold when we reached home & I was glad to be in. Wrote some notes & sent off to Mrs Perry who starts tomorrow for Madrid to ask her to take a bracelet for Emilia Riaño & studs for Clarita Hunt. We dined at 8. I sang in the evening– Mr Spence played piano while Henry & I played cribbage till bed time.
