19 October 1881 — Ca’ Capello, Venice
Wednesday. 19th October [1881]. Practised singing for an hour after breakfast. Cortelazzo sat to me in the morning for his bust. Spence came abt 12 & began a sketch of him in oils at the same time. Lunched at 1.15. Henry went & fetched Lady Bury & then came back for me. We rowed to St Lazaro the Armenian Convent where we found Ld Bury in the Convent garden sketching. We left Lady Bury there & Henry & I returned home. It was a splendid day but still it was coldish & we could see there was a good deal of snow on the distant mountains. Wrote to Mrs Austen & copied for Henry. We dined at 7.30 & in the evening had a tea party—the Burys & 2 Keppel girls, Mr Field, the 2 Story men, Mr Peters, Mr Pennington, (all US), M. & Mme Hurtado & Idita & Mrs Perry, Mrs Eden & Miss Ker all came. After tea I sang one song & then Mr Spence sang some comic songs which greatly amused people & they did not leave till 11.30.
