20 October 1881 — Ca’ Capello, Venice
Thursday. 20th [October 1881]. Went to work directly after breakfast at Cortelazzo bust & left singing till the afternoon. Had a great row with Caterina when I asked for the answer as to whether she was going to stay on she said Giovanni had promised her husband shd stop. I called him in to hear what she said & then ensued a great altercation but I stuck to my point & said I would give her 10f to carry away her furniture. Hill remained in bed with a bad cold. It was a pouring wet day and I did not go out. Practised singing from 4 to 5. Henry & Spence went for a walk in the afternoon & then Henry came in & sat for his portrait to Spence who wanted to give finishing touches. I had a letter from Connie to say she decides to come out & stay with us & will be here next Monday or Tuesday. Also one from Blanche saying she had got safe from Ireland to London. Wrote letters to Ivor & Arthur & had a long confab with Cortelazzo abt arranging my lapis necklace. After dinner sang & Spence sang & played cribbage.
