22 October 1881 — Ca’ Capello, Venice
Saturday. 22nd October [1881]. Cortelazzo sat to me from 9 till 1 for his bust & at the same time Spence painted him. He then left by the 2.15 train to return to Vicenza. It had rained all the morning & cleared up middle day & was a very fine afternoon. M. & Mme Pilat came to call– Idita Hurtado came & fetched Henry & took him out with her in her sandolo. I set for ½ hour to Spence for my own portrait & was just going out when M. & Mme Castellani & M. & Mme Pioda came to call– After their visit I went to call on Mrs Bronson & sat a long time with her & out of her window watched the weighing of 2 gondolas for a race which is to be rowed tomorrow morng at 6 between the 2 best rowers in Venice. I came home & found Idita & Henry returned & Henry sitting to Spence. Idita & I practised the guitar together till I had to dress for dinner & we went to dine with Mr & Mrs Eden. He was carried into the dining room & lay as he eat– In the evening a lot of young men came in to call & Mr & Miss Ker & a Russian called Wolkoff & a very pretty young woman a Mme Aaron. We all left abt 10 & we came home & played cribbage for an hour. We had our double windows put in & mosquito curtains all taken down–
