23 October 1881 — Ca’ Capello, Venice
Sunday. 23rd October [1881]. Hill & I went to church at 11 & came away before the sermon– Saw Lady Bagot in the distance. Sat to Spence for my portrait till lunch. It was a pouring wet day & very dark & in the morning there was a very high tide. This morng at 7 the race came off between the two best gondoliers for 4000 fcs & we saw all the boats coming back abt 9.30 the race having been in another direction. Before we had finished lunch came Mr & Mrs Ball to call & they stayed a long time talking. Henry then went out walking to call on Mr Brown. I sat to Mr Spence again & was interrupted by a visit from Mr Page an American gentleman presented by Mr Field the other night. He talked a great deal abt Spain & Algiers where he had been a great deal. Then came Idita de Hurtado to played the guitar with me & we practised the different chords of the different keys very solemnly till Mr Spence came in & he made us laugh till we could do nothing & nearly till we cried. Idita went home at ¼ to 7 & I stuck in despatches till dinner time. Mr Browning & his sister & Mr Malcolm dined with us. The Balls came to tea in the evening & Mr Spence played the piano–
