24 October 1881 — Ca’ Capello, Venice
Monday. 24th October [1881]. Cortelazzo turned up by 9.30 from Vicenza to sit to me– Pucci came for my singing lesson but as Cortelazzo had come so far on purpose I begged Pucci to excuse me for once & let him go & I worked hard at the bust till lunch time. After lunch I did a little more while Henry gave Spence a last sitting for his portrait. At 3 Mrs Eden came & we all went out. I went out walking with her; we went to Morchio’s the Silversmiths in the Spaderia & found he had rather pretty things. We went to another antiquary shop on the Ponte dei Dai & then walked to the Piazza & round to Mrs Eden’s house to have tea. Found Mrs Ker sitting with Mr Eden. After taking some tea Mrs Eden took me home in the gondola– We stopped at the Austrian consul’s to call on Mme Pilat who was not at home. Practised guitar a little & then stuck despatches. Went to dine at Mme Hurtado’s at 7. Met Mr & Mrs Ball & Pss of Montenegro’s sister & Mr Malcolm. In the eveng Miss Bronson, Miss Ker, Mr Story, Mr Field, Mr Peters & Mme Pilat were there. We all sang. Mr Spence giving his funny Florentine opera & it was nearly 12 before we got home–
