25 October 1881 — Ca’ Capello, Venice
Tuesday. 25th October [1881]. Set to work at Cortelazzo’s bust directly after breakfast till lunch– After lunch went out with Idita Hurtado in her sandolo– There was a white fog which lifted in the afternoon and the sun came out. But when we landed at the Lido at Sta Elisabetta & walked across to the open sea we found the fog thicker than ever. We met Browning & his sister taking their constitutional along the sands. We walked by the Favorita by the lane to the Jewish burying ground but it was not very pleasant as it was very muddy. We got into the sandolo at the ancient Jewish burying ground & Idita rowed as well as the gondolier to get home quicker. The effect was very curious & like a dream for the fog shut out the view all round & we could hear the bells of the churches we past but see nothing. When we got into the town we were again out of the fog. Went home & practised the guitar till Idita had to go home to dinner. I stuck despatches. Music in evening.
