26 October 1881 — Ca’ Capello, Venice
Wednesday. 26th [October 1881]. Practised singing for an hour. Had letters fm Hobart P. & Lady Dickson. Sat to Spence for my portrait. After lunch Henry sat a little for his. The weather was very bad, fog & heavy rain but abt 3 it cleared & Henry, Spence & I went out in the gondola to the Academy to try & see Dorsi’s statue of La Stanchezza. It was not to be seen the man said it was “encasá e inchiodá” to send away. We went on to the Seminario at the Salute to see the Giorgone & to study Victorio’s terra cotta busts as I wanted to learn the treatment of the hair & beard. Spence had never seen them & was delighted with them. We went & walked under the Procuratie Nuove—met Mr Malcolm also walking. We left Spence there as he was going to dine at the Pension Suisse & Henry & I came home. Idita Hurtado arrived to practise guitar. Mr Field came to call & we had tea in the studio & when he left we went down to the drawing room to practise our guitars. Idita could not stay long so when she left I went up & wrote to Blogg sending him a cheque for £100– Stuck in despatches. Henry went at ¼ to 7 to the station to meet Charlie & Connie & Bee & Evely & they arrived here by 8. We dined as soon as they were ready & the 2 girls went to bed directly after dinner & we all retired early.
