29 October 1881 — Ca’ Capello, Venice
Saturday. 29th [October 1881]. Breakfast at 9. Connie, Charlie & the girls went off on foot to see the Frari. I practised singing & in the middle of it Giovanni came to say the fire in Sir Wm Gregory’s room would not draw & I went down & we tried all kinds of means & ways in vain. By the time I had finished that & my singing it was too late to set to work to model so I sat quiet & sewed & Connie returned & sat with me & wrote & talked till lunch. After lunch to wh Mr Spence came, we all went out. Henry, Charlie & the Gregorys walked to the Stabilimento. Connie, I & the girls went in the gondola & they all rowed by turns. We all met at the Stabilimento & Henry showed them the mosaic working. It was drizzling so we were obliged to turn homewards. We got the Stabilimento gondola & the Gregorys, Henry & I came home in it stopping at the Piazza Manin to show the Gregorys the flying stair lower outside the “Carita.” Mme Hurtado & Idita came to tea, also Mr Lowell & Mr Field & we had a very pleasant hour. Lowell being very nice as always. When they were all gone we came up Connie & I to the studio & sat there, I sewing, she copying, music till dinner time & both chatting. Mr & Mrs Ball dined with us. Music & cribbage in the eveng.
