Monday. 31st October [1881]. Lesson of Pucci at 10 o’cl. Connie’s children had their first Italian lesson—then they went out to see the Frari. I cleaned and fumigated a cloak to put away in camphor & then went to Henry & we corrected the proofs of the Lace book together wh we finished by lunch time. Spence came to lunch. Henry walked out with the Gregorys & Connie & Co went out in the gondola. I remained at home & wrote letters &c. Tea in drawing room & then Connie & I finished arranging the drawing rooms. We dined at 7.30. The Brownings & Spence dined with us– In the evening we had a tea party. M. & Mme La Croix, the Soveral family, Mr Lowell, Mr Field, Mme Hurtado, Idita, Miss Ker, M. & Mme de Pilat & the Balls. Every body was full of the gondoliers’ strike wh they say is to begin tonight at 12 & in protest against the small steamers wh now ply on the canal & wh take away their trade. Constance played the piano & we had a pleasant evening.
