1 November 1881 — Ca’ Capello, Venice
Tuesday. 1st November [1881]. After the children had had their Italian lesson they went out in Idita’s sandolo to hear the music service at St Marks. I modelled all the morning. Lunch at 1.30 & directly after Henry, the Gregorys & 2 girls went off to St Marks to see the Palla d’oro which was exposed today. They sent back the gondola to fetch Connie, Charlie & myself & we went & joined them at the church. Vespers was going on & the Palla was uncovered & looked glorious. Venice presented a curious aspect thro’ the strike of the gondoliers. At the traghetti there were only a couple of gondolas manned by sailors—& all the gondoliers stood by idling & chattering. There were only a few private gondolas about. Connie, Charlie, Lady Gregory & the girls, Henry & I went off to the Lido. It was a lovely day & Venice looked grand. We landed at Sta Elisabetta & walked across to the sands where the children were delighted to run about picking up shells. On the beach we met the youngest Miss Bagot & Genl. Fane (Fane’s horse) & his wife & I spoke to him & was introduced to his wife. We could not take a long walk as it got late & so we came home the distant mountains tipped with snow stood out clear on one side the Dolomites & the Alps were towards Trieste & on the other the hills above Bologna. The sun set was lovely & the water shot with all colours, blue, pink & green & gold. Had tea & then sang Christy Minstrel songs with the girls & Connie. Dined at 8. Cribbage & music.
