2 November 1881 — Ca’ Capello, Venice
Wednesday. 2nd November [1881]. Spent the morning in arranging things with Connie & then I opened my drawer full of silver & strass ornaments & gave her some & she gave me a Guest knife in exchange & so we frittered away our morning. Lunched at 1 & then everybody started off for Murano to see the glass blowing. They dropped me en passant at Mrs Edens & I asked her to take me out so I went in their gondola with Mr & Mrs Eden. We went to St Giobbe to the gardens & I bought some plants. Then we rowed round by the lagunes to see the distant mountains & returned by St Giov: at Paolo. There Mrs Eden & I got out & walked, looking into old shops in search of old copper water vessels to use as flower pots. We did not find what we wanted. Returned to Mrs Eden’s & she sent me home in her gondola– Had tea & then sang with the children. Went upstairs & began to stick despatches. Helped Henry to correct proofs of lace book & that made us rather late for dinner. Cribbage & music.
