5 November 1881 — Ca’ Capello, Venice
Saturday. 5th November [1881]. Stuck in despatches all the morning for Henry. After lunch we all went off to the Lido in the Stabilimento & our own gondolas. We walked on the sands picking up shells– Saw the men fishing for razor fish which they do by prodding in the shallow water with a fine barbed wire & so thread them on the wire. We walked towards the Favorita & made tea on the shore & so only got back after 5. There was a lovely sunset. On our return we found Mr Burton arrived to stay with us. We had got him a room at Mr Malcolm’s for him as ours are full. We dined at 7 & went afterwards to Rossini Theatre to see the Opera of Rigoletto. It was very well given & the new prima donna Mlle Lary a girl of 18 & not bad looking sang very well. The tenor was not so good but the whole thing was creditable. Connie, Charlie, Lady Gregory, Henry & I went. We left Mr Burton & Sir Wm stayed at home.
