9 November 1881 — Ca’ Capello, Venice
Wednesday. 9th November [1881]. Had a singing lesson of Pucci. Connie & I went out walking. I modelled all the morning working at the figure of Cortelazzo’s bust. Css Marcello, Theresa & Andrea came to luncheon & she & I sat talking some time in the afternoon. Henry took Connie & the children out. I returned to my modelling until dark. Connie had a headache & slept on the sofa in my room. Css Olga Mocenigo came to tea. She has just returned this very morning from Austria. I was very glad to see her again. After tea returned to the studio & sat talking to Connie & Mr Burton. Directly after dinner Henry & I & Connie & Charlie went off to Mme Pilat’s to spend the evening. Met there Prince & Princess Metternich, Mme Hurtado & Idita, Mrs O’Connell, Mr de Reiger, V &c a small party– Connie played, Mme Pilat sang. Made acquaintance with the Metternichs. She is rather nice looking—very smart & with what Henry calls “Vienna swagger” & Connie “side.” She seemed noisy & showed her pretty foot stockings & shoes freely. The Prince played one of his compositions on the piano & made a great noise—but he seems a very amiable man. We got home abt 11.30.
