11 November 1881 — Ca’ Capello, Venice
Friday. 11th November [1881]. We breakfasted at 8.30 that the Gregorys might go off to the P&O steamer. They took leave of us at 9.15 & went off to Egypt. Henry accompanied them to the steamer wh was lying in the Zattere. I gave them a letter for Nazli Khanum & sent her a serpent bracelet. Connie, Charlie, the 2 girls & Idita Hurtado went to Mogliano by the 10.15 train to spend the day with Countess Marcello. She took them to the races at Treviso & they did not return till dinner time. They had intended returning at 4.50 but telegraphed to say they would arrive later. I modelled all the morning. After lunch Henry, Mr Burton & I went out in gondola. Went to the Stabilimento & Henry gave me a pretty flower glass. Went to the Piazza to talk to Ongania abt the Lace translation. The band was playing in the Piazza. Mr Burton left us and then I left Henry at the Britannia to call on the Usedoms & came home feeling rather tired– Wrote to Blanche. Stuck in despatches till dinner time. Connie & Co returned rather late for dinner. I sang in the evening. Henry & Connie played cribbage. When I came in & was sitting pasting Henry came & sat with me a little while and we began to talk of our plans for the winter and we were regretting leaving here next month. Henry said he would get to work again when we returned to London at wh I said why should we not go straight to Savile Row—& spend Christmas in England for the first time since we married– This struck us both as a bright idea & we resolved to think it over. We should go to England as soon as the Frederics come here–
