16 November 1881 — Ca’ Capello, Venice
Wednesday. 16th [November 1881]. Cortelazzo sat to me & I worked away all morng & till past 3 but it was so dark & such a thick fog that the light was not good all day. Henry went out after lunch & returned for me at 3.30 & we went to call on P. & Pss Metternich at Casa Guiccioli opposite but they were out. I went on to Mme de Hurtado where Connie, Charlie & the girls had gone to a house tennis party. Henry left me there & went on to call on Mrs Bronson. I found the latter, Lady Bagot, Mme Usedom &c all at Mme Hurtado’s. Had some tea & very soon went home. While I was at work modelling in the morning Mr Burton came to give advice & he began to talk to the parrot—suddenly I heard sounds of distress & Mr B. having put his finger into Polly’s cage with the charitable intention of scratching his poll—got rewarded by a good grab with his great sharp black beak. We had to call on Hill to dress the wound wh was pretty deep but we could not feel very sorry as it was such a stupid thing to have done. Mr Malcolm dined with us. Connie played the piano all the evening. Idita Hurtado came after dinner & danced the Tarentella—in Romany dress.
