19 November 1881 — Ca’ Capello, Venice
Saturday. 19th November [1881]. I modelled in the morning. Charlie came in to ask Connie to go out. She was too busy to go so without saying a word, I slipped out, dressed & went out with him myself. I took him to the “rubbish shop” of old Patise near S. Polo who has 3 shops. We were very much amused & poked out all kinds of queer things. We got home just before luncheon and then told Connie what we had done & settled she should go in the afternoon with Charlie. Directly after lunch I went with Henry & the 2 girls in gondola & left them with their beloved Idita to row in the sandolo. Henry & I went to the Stabilimento & he got me some new glasses– On to the Piazza to Ongania’s about the Lace translation. We saw the Lottery being drawn in the Loggia in front of St Marks– Met Prince Metternich and walked up & down with him looking into the Cafe’s for Mr Burton and at last we found him & he came home with us. Met Css Olga Mocenigo & her little girl & walked on Piazzetta with them & then went to Favenza as Mr Burton wanted to show Henry a Tiepolo on sale. I did not admire it. We went on to Mme Canevaro & found her at home & so Henry & I went up to see her & then went home. P. Metternich, Mme de Pilat, Lady & Leila Bagot & Idita came to tea with us, the Prince played the piano. The violin from Nobile’s arrived for Bee to try & Mme Pilat took it to show to her friend a violinist here. Cribbage & Music in evening.
