21 November 1881 — Ca’ Capello, Venice
Monday. 21st November [1881]. Bee was better but kept on the sofa. I modelled all the morning. Charlie & Evely went out to try & see the fête of the Madonna della Salute altho’ it was said there was to be no procession. There was one after all from St Marks’ over the Bridge of Boats to the Salute. Connie remained at home & wrote in the studio. Idita Hurtado came for a little while. After luncheon I returned to my work & Bee lay on the sofa writing a play in which I assisted her. Connie & Evely went out with Henry. Mr & Mrs Harrison, friends of Connie & Charlie came & dined with us at 7.30 being on their way home from Egypt. He is Quarter Master Genl. at Aldershot & has been making a kind of tour of inspection of the fortifications in Egypt in case England has to occupy the country. They left us early & Henry, Connie, Charlie & I went to tea at Princess Metternichs. It was not a very lively party. M. & Mme Wolkoff, Mme Canevaro, Mlle Cozzi, Mme Pilat, Mr Passini & the French Consul & Baron Reyer & his daughter & Css Olga Mocenigo composed the party– There was some music Connie played, Mme Canevaro sang & Metternich thumped. Css Olga was taken with an ague fit & had to be taken home. We returned home abt 12– In getting out of the gondola Connie banged her head & hurt herself.
