29 November 1881 — Ca’ Capello, Venice
Tuesday. 29th [November 1881]. Mrs Eden came here & Connie & Charlie & I walked out with her. We went to the 2nd hand book shop near the Postoffice & I got a copy of Sansovino’s book on Venice for Henry to see. The man asked 30 fs for it. We went on afterwards to the Piazza & hired a gondola to go home. Left Mrs Eden at her own door. Then called at the Hurtado’s door for Bee & Evely. They were to be sent home later so we went on home. After lunch Henry & I went out together in the gondola– Connie & Co went out with Mr Malcolm in his gondola to see his garden & the Fenice Opera House. Henry & I left cards &c. We went to Vianelli’s to make an appointment for Henry to be photod tomorrow at 10.30. Called on the Usedoms at Hotel Britannia & found them at home. Mme Usedom talked away about every kind of thing & at last the talk came round to Rome & the Pagets. Mme Usedom is a great friend of theirs & it was rather amusing to discover how she had discussed the subject with Lady P—in a way very much to my disadvantage. Mme Usedom said Lady P. believed that last year at Rome I was seeing the Queen of Italy constantly—but now that Mme Usedom knew me she perceived that someone had made mischief!! I gave Mme Usedom a few particulars of Lady Paget’s incivility to me which rather astonished her. I hurried to be home at 5 as I expected Baron Warsberg to come to pay me a farewell visit. He leaves Venice tomorrow. I was too late. He came before I could get home. We went in the evening to Css Olga Mocenigo—she had a little tea party. The whole evening I played dominos with Pss Metternich against Henry & Passini the artist & we won every game.
