3 December 1881 — Ca’ Capello, Venice
Saturday. 3rd December [1881]. Sat talking & sewing most of the morng. The Abbate Zanetti brought Henry a fine set of jewels on sale of the Empire times—large light yellow topazes—enamel & gold of different colours—a very showy handsome set. They asked 6000 fcs but we were to offer– Mr Malcolm came in answer to a note from me. We were rather in a fix about Ercoli the servant. He had gone to Fred in the morning & made a long speech in French the gist of which was that I had hired a cook for them who was a very bad character, a great cheat & very quarrelsome &c &c, On hearing this we thought that Ercoli wd be likely to give some trouble as he already begun to abuse a servant of whom he could know nothing & I sent to Mr Malcolm to consult. He agreed with me we had better get rid of Ercoli & send him back to Milan. The Abbate Zanetti came to call. After lunch we had a visit from P. & Pss Metternich & then Mrs Eden came & she took me out in the Gondola with her while Henry took out Fred & Florence & Idalina– We went to call on Mme Pilat & found her at home—& I took leave of her—left a few cards & she left me at home. Mr Malcolm came back with the parure Monsgr Zanetti wanted us to buy saying it was not worth intrinsically more than 1000 fcs & advised us not to buy it. Had tea at 5. Dined upstairs. Idalina sang—a rather painful performance—as her voice is harsh & unpleasing. I sang a couple of Spanish songs & at 10 Henry & I went off to Css Marcellos’ where there were a few people. We played dominos. I & P., Metternich against Css Pallfy & Henry—my side lost. Pss Marie Dol was there & telling everybody her experiences in the cure she had undergone. Css Olga Mocenigo was there, the Hurtados & Css Valmarana who played whist. We went home abt 12.30.
