16 December 1881 — Langham House, Portland Place
Friday. 16th December [1881]. I walked out after breakfast to my shoemaker in Cavendish St. Met Edward Ponsonby in Cav. Sqre & walked there with him. Went to Blanche’s & sat with her some time working & talking abt many things especially my difficulty in getting on with Cornelia. I went to 4 Cavendish Place to call on Mrs W. Hanson– I saw her mother Mrs Oldham—Mrs Willie was out. I returned home for lunch & when Henry joined me he said he had been walking with Mrs Willie having met her. After lunch Henry & I went off in a hansom to see Mrs Austen who seemed a great deal better & more sensible than last year. She knew us quite well & made us a heap of compliments. However she said she had heard nothing of the Frederic Layards & at the same time showed us a letter she had just recd from Fred at Venice. She seemed under the impression that Henry & I were just married & returned from a trip—but she knew we lived in Savile Row. From there Henry went to the F.O. & I went to Lady Eastlake’s– Found her just going out but I went in & sat with her a few minutes & then I went home & read by the fire. Abt 4,30 Connie called with her boy Monty & she left him to have tea with me & went on to Blanche’s. Henry came in soon after & we played cribbage. Blanche came & dined & Henry & I played cribbage again in the evening. B. left us at 11.
