17 December 1881 — Langham House, Portland Place
Saturday. 17th December [1881]. Henry went out directly after breakfast to go to the Pantechnicon to see abt removing our boxes to Savile Row. Mrs Willie Hanson came to see me & we sat gossipping abt Consple till 12 when she walked with me as far at 15 Queen Anne St & we parted. I & Blanche walked to Marshalls & Snelgrove’s to order a mantle for Kate & then I came home leaving B at her door. We lunched at 1.30 & did not go out again as altho’ it had been a fine morning it rained & blew hard all the afternoon. At 3:30 Monty came to see us & invited us to go & dine with him & go to the Play. Later we had a visit from Mr Burton who we did not know was back from Italy. He came to consult Henry abt buying a picture by Alunno wh Castellani of Rome has & for wh he asks £12000– We went to dine with Monty at the Batchelor’s Club where we had a very good dinner. It is a new club & the only one where a member may take ladies to dine. After dinner he took us to the Savoy Theatre to see “Patience.” The theatre is quite new & in charming taste. It is all in white & gold stripes & lighted by electric lights. It is very easy to get into & not very hot. The drop curtain is yellow quilted satin embroidered—the whole decorations in the best taste. Grossmith acted well—the music was pretty but the whole play seemed to have missed fire & to be stupid. We saw the great professional beauty Mrs Cornwallis West in a box—most indecently decolletée but very pretty. It rained hard when we came home by midnight.
