18 December 1881 — Langham House, Portland Place
Sunday. 18th December [1881]. We had promised to go to lunch with Connie but we got a note to put us off as she was not well. I went after breakfast to see Blanche & ask her what was the matter. She said Connie was ill with a liver attack. I went to St Anne’s church with Blanche & Edward in a cab. It was a bitter cold day. I sat in Monty’s pew & he came also to church. The D. of Cambridge, the Princess of Wales & 2 of her girls were at church. The singing was not half so good as it used to be. I walked part of the way back to Lang. Hse with Monty. He went to his breakfast. Henry & I lunched & then took a hansom & went to see Connie. We found her still in bed. Princess Frederica was sitting with her. I sat some time talking to her & Connie– Blanche came later with Oliver & Vere & the latter improved the occasion by screaming lustily. What with the screams of this child—all Connie’s family rushing in & out of the room & the general disturbance in the house I was greatly bewildered & left in a maze. We went to call on the Poynters who were not at home. Went on to see the Miss Duff Gordons. Found Georgy at home & she was very pleased to see us– Alice came in before we left & there was a deal of chatter & kissing & we hurried home as it was dark & cold. Had tea & a visit from Richard Du Cane & his boy Arthur. They went away to go & meet Maria & Ola whom they expected on her return from Freiburg from visiting her boy Louis. We went to dine at 15 Queen Anne St with Blanche & Edw & met Monty & Walter Ponsonby. Came home at 11.
