19 December 1881 — Langham House, Portland Place
Monday. 19th December [1881]. Went out walking with Henry down Regent St to Savile Row. Monty was out. The van arrived from Pantechnicon with all our boxes & we had them stowed away. I made Henry go to Sandford & Blake & get some stuff for his cough & then we went to 50 Albemarle St to see the Murrays & went up into Mr Cook’s office where the Murrays père et fils came to see us. Henry got of them 2 books for Bee & Evely. I went back to Savile Row while Henry went to see Ld Cowley & when he fetched me we walked back to Lang. Hse by Bond St & we looked in the windows for something for Henry to buy me for a Christmas present—but did not see anything we much cared for. We lunched at 1 & expected Alice Du Cane. Just as I was going out with Blanche at 2 o’cl Alice & her mother turned up. I left them with Henry & went off shopping & returned at 5. We went to Arthur’s lodgings in Half Moon St & he begged us to go on to Thornhill’s & meet us there to look for something I wanted wh we eventually never found. Arthur, Maria & Alice dined with us– Arthur made me a present of a Norwegian belt for a Christmas box.
